Madrid City Council authorizes a project that will use geo-radar to find remains of Miguel de Cervantes in the Convent of the Trinitarians of Madrid.
Four centuries after Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, universal literature figure, died in poverty, his figure becomes of concern to Madrid authorities. Thus, the regional government has authorized the City of Madrid to start searching for the remains of alcalaíno genius in the grounds of the old house of the cloistered Convent of the Trinitarians, in the Barrio de las Letras, where Cervantes was buried on 23 April 1616. Trinitarians led the rescue from captivity in Algiers, and after his death, was buried in the ancient temple of the Madrid monastery.
A memorial plaque on the front of the place reminds the great writer, for many considered the greatest novelist of the Spanish language and one of its main revitalizing, was buried in the convent.
The search will begin soon in the basement of the old monastic church, with the introduction of a ground penetrating radar, a device capable of frequency profiling underground cavities, size and sometimes their grade of occupancy. Since 1870, after a report commissioned by the Real Academia Española to Manuel Roca de Togores, Marquis of Molins, there is certainty of the existence of nine burials in the old temple of the monastery, one of them corresponding to the skeletal remains of an adult male.
Right in front of the house of Quevedo – in the convent of the Discalced Trinitarians, on Calle Lope de Vega 18- the remains of Cervantes are buried. But no one knows the exact place in the 3000 meters the convent occupies. (Picture: imagenesqueyoveo.blogspot.com.es)
