On November 30th, the ARPA (Association for the Recovery of the Archbishop’s Palace) officially presented this video in the Corral de Comedias of Alcalá de Henares. This video has been designed and developed by ARPA in collaboration with the Telefónica Foundation in its efforts to remember and spread the importance of this building, wich was even bigger than the Cisnerian University itself.

In it you will see how this fantastic building was before its partial destruction, product of the large fire which destroyed two thirds of its length in 1939, and subsequent looting and neglect.

A little bit of History

The origin of the Archbishop’s Palace in Alcalá comes from the thirteenth century, with the Archbishop Jiménez de Rada. Successive Toledo prelates reformed and magnified it to transform it into one of the finest Renaissance palaces in Spain. After years of ruin and destruction, the Palace was assigned in 1859 to the State, which restored it to host the General Archives of the Kingdom of Spain.

During the Civil War received no serious damages, although it was headquarters of the Republican army and workshop, use the victorious army remained. On August 11, 1939 it suffered a major fire that destroyed the building and its documents, the causes of the fire were never clarified. Then there was only looting and neglect.

The Palace has been the scene of important events in the history of Spain. It was inhabited by almost all the kings of Castile. Here King Juan I died, and born Catherine of Aragon, Queen of England, and Ferdinand of Habsburg, German Emperor.

In the Archbishop’s Palace, Aragon and Castile concluded the conquest of the kingdom of Granada, in its rooms the process against the Templars was initiated, and councils and courts were celebrated, such as those in 1348 wich enacted the Ordinance of Alcalá, original compilation of laws of Castile. And in the Palace the first interview between Queen Elizabeth and Christopher Columbus was held.

This virtual recreation was made to rescue the image and memory of the Archbishop’s Palace, making it known to the present generation. Well aware of its historical and artistic importance, its potential will be conceived and their recovery will be possible.

This video was promoted, designed and developed by the Association for the Recovery of the Archbishop’s Palace of Alcalá de Henares (ARPA), in collaboration with the Telefónica Foundation.

Este sábado, Belén viviente de Pezuela de las Torres

En Pezuela de las Torres, a solo 30 Km de Alcalá de Henares, este sábado podrás disfrutar de su XX Belén Viviente, donde podrás hacer un viaje en el tiempo hasta mismísimo año cero.

El sábado 7 de diciembre, a partir de las 16:00 horas podrás acceder a la zona de los decorados, ver los preparativos, charlar con los actores, ver los animales, calentarte en las hogueras, visitar el mercado, etc.

La representación de la obra comienza a las 18:00 horas y finaliza a las 19:15h., es gratuita y no se necesita hacer reservas, aunque conviene llegar con suficiente antelación para aparcar y colocarse en primera fila.

A la finalización de la representación también podrás acercarte a las escenas para charlar con los actores, hacerles fotos, entregar las cartas a los Reyes Magos, ver de cerca a los animales, etc. y también degustar las gachas, migas, caldo, rosquillas, etc. que se han estado elaborando durante la representación del Belén.

En 1994 se representó por primera vez en Pezuela de las Torres el Belén Viviente. Los primeros años se representaba en viviendas y garajes particulares. A partir del año 1998 se realiza la representación, por las calles centrales de este pueblo Alcarreño y Madrileño situado al Este de la Comunidad de Madrid.

This Saturday, living nativity scene in Pezuela de las Torres

In Pezuela de las Torres, a nice village just 30 km far from Alcalá de Henares, this Saturday you can enjoy the 20th living nativity scene (Belén viviente), where you can trip back in time to the year zero.

On Saturday, December 7, from 4 pm You can access the backstage, see the preparations, chat with the actors, see the animals, warm up in the fires, visit the market, etc.

The performance will start at 6 pm, ending at 7:15 pm, It is free and no reservations required, but you should arrive early enough to park and be placed in the front row.

In 1994 it was performed the first living nativity scene in Pezuela de las Torres. The early years it was represented in private homes and garages. Beginning in 1998, the representation is now made by central streets of this village.

Concierto de piano de Susana Gómez

El viernes 13 de diciembre, la pianista Susana Gómez Vázquez ofrecerá en el Auditorio del Colegio de los Basilios un concierto interpretando obras de J. S. Bach, H. Dutilleux, A. Plaza y R. Schumann.

Nacida en Alcalá de Henares (1995), Susana Gómez Vázquez comienza sus estudios de piano en el Conservatorio de Alcalá de Henares con Miguel A. Martínez Guillén.

Ha sido galardonada en concursos nacionales e internacionales de piano y música de cámara, recibiendo el primer premio Hazen del Conservatorio de Alcalá de Henares, el del Certamen Musical Intercentros-Madrid en sus distintas ediciones entre los años 2004 y 2009, el de Ciutat de Carlet en 2009, y más recientemente el Iris Dyer de la Royal Academy of Music y el Freddy Morgan de la Purcell School.

En 2010, ganó el primer premio de composición del North London Festival of Music and Drama. También fue galardonada en la “BBC Proms Inspire Young Composers 2011”. En 2013, ha obtenido el primer premio de composición de la Purcell School, siendo su obra interpretada en el Queen Elisabeth Hall de Londres.

Piano concert by Susana Gómez

On Friday December 13, pianist Susana Gómez Vázquez will offer in the Auditorium of the College of Basilian a concert performing works by J. S. Bach, H. Dutilleux, A. Plaza and R. Schumann.

Born in Alcalá de Henares (1995), Susana Gómez Vázquez began studying piano at the Conservatory of Alcala de Henares with Miguel A. Martínez Guillén.

She has won national and international competitions in piano and chamber music, receiving the first Conservatory of Alcalá de Henares Hazen Award, the Musical Intercentros-Madrid Competition in its different editions between 2004 and 2009, the Ciutat de Carlet in 2009, and more recently the Iris Dyer of the Royal Academy of Music and the Freddy Morgan from the Purcell School.

In 2010, she won the first prize for composition of the North London Festival of Music and Drama. She was also awarded by the ” BBC Proms Inspire Young Composers 2011″. In 2013, she won the first prize for composition of the Purcell School, and its was played at the London Queen Elisabeth Hall.

For the first time ever, all the cars the Asturian driver has ever raced will be brought together under one roof, from that first kart that he began with as a child, to one of his latest Ferraris. Now you can enjoy a new Tommy Mel’s diner in Alcalá de Henares, complete with 50s American style food, music blasting and energetic waiters in timely costume.

You can also enjoy the Open Day at the National Library, the photo exhibition of natural and cultural heritage of Alcalá and the expected Diana Navarro and Complutense Symphonic Band concert in Teatro Salón Cervantes.

And don’t forget that fusion of treasures of the city that are the Capilla de san Ildefonso, recently restored, and the Poliglot Byble.

Alcalá recibe la Navidad

La Navidad ya está entre nosotros y Alcalá de Henares se ha preparado para celebrarla como procede en estas fechas. También habrá actividades para todos los públicos y edades.

La Plaza de Cervantes será el eje central albergando una pista de hielo, un mercado navideño, un gran árbol de Navidad y un tren elevado. Destaca la puesta en valor del entorno de la antigua GAL (ver mapa), que acogerá el Gran Belén Monumental y el Circo. La programación infantil, con talleres, cine y musicales, unificada en una carpa en la Plaza de los Santos Niños, será otro de los atractivos principales de la Navidad en la Ciudad Patrimonio de la Humanidad.

La concejala de Fiestas Mayores, Virginia Sanz, ha desgranado en rueda de prensa los detalles de una programación navideña que “afianza muchas de las apuestas que pusimos en marcha el año pasado, como el cambio de recorrido en al Cabalgata de Reyes, pero que también trae novedades”.

“La Plaza de Cervantes será el eje central –ha dicho Sanz- del ambiente navideño que queremos que impregne la ciudad, pues albergará una gran pista de hielo, un mercado navideño con casetas de madera y un gran árbol de Navidad, que esta ocasión llegará a los 20 metros de altura. Además se instalará un tren elevado y un carrusel de estilo veneciano“. A partir del 20 de diciembre se abrirá una gran pista de hielo en la misma Plaza de Cervantes, frente al Ayuntamiento y la Torre de Santa María.

La carpa con las actividades infantiles –prosigue- estará ubicada en la Plaza de los Santos Niños “y pondremos en valor un nuevo espacio de la ciudad, el entorno de la antigua fábrica de GAL (ver mapa), que acogerá un Circo y una de las joyas de esta Navidad, el Belén Monumental obra de la Asociación Complutense de Belenistas, que más que un Belén al uso, podemos definir como un Museo del Belenismo del que podrán disfrutar todos los alcalaínos y todos aquellos que nos visiten en estos días”.

El Belén Monumental (Antigua Fábrica Gal; calle Moldavia, 2) se inaugurará el próximo domingo, 1 de diciembre, a las 20:30 horas y el horario posterior será del 2 de diciembre al 6 de enero de 12:00 a 14:00 y de 18:00 a 21:00 horas (los días 24 y 31 de diciembre y 5 de enero de 12:00 a 14:00 horas y los días 25 de diciembre y 1 y 6 de enero de 18:00 a 21:00 horas.) Además, la Casa de la Entrevista (calle San Juan) acogerá la Exposición Belenes del Mundo, con el mismo horario de visita.

Los niños, los protagonistas de la Navidad

El Ayuntamiento de Alcalá de Henares ha diseñado una programación con decenas de actividades para los más pequeños. Talleres, cine, juegos y musicales quedarán unificados en una carpa climatizada de 800 metros cuadrados que se instalará en la Plaza de los Santos Niños.

Desde el 21 de diciembre y hasta el 6 de enero en horario de 11:00 a 14:00 y 18:00 a 21:00 (excepto los días de cine o espectáculo), los pequeños podrán acudir a este Gran Parque Infantil Gratuito. Además podrán disfrutar de proyecciones de cine familiar gratuito (Viernes 27 de diciembre, 18:00 h. “Cuento de Navidad” y Viernes 3 de enero, 18:00 h. “The Polar Express”).

Además, un total de cinco espectáculos en directo, todos a las 18:00 horas, harán las delicias de los más pequeños.

  • 21 de diciembre “El Espantapájaros Fantasma”, un espectáculo para espectadores de 5 a 105 años,
  • 26 de diciembre “Blancanieves, El Musical”, en una nueva versión del universal cuento
  • 28 de diciembre turno para otro clásico, “Caperucita Roja
  • 29 de diciembre, el Musical”, “Dinamita Pérez”, en formato interactivo y participativo
  • 5 de enero magia en formato familiar con “Sheridan, la aventura mágica”.

 

Las entradas para estos espectáculos se podrán adquirir en la Oficina de Turismo de la Plaza de los Santos Niños a un precio único de 5 euros.

La puerta principal del Ayuntamiento recibirá todos los días a los Carteros Reales, para que todos los niños y niñas puedan hacer llegar sus mejores deseos a los Reyes Magos, gracias a la encomiable labor de las Peñas Festivas de la Ciudad. “La aportación de las Peñas festivas, -ha explicado Sanz- también en Navidad es fundamental, ya que llevan con gran orgullo y dedicación ser los verdaderos “mensajeros” de S.S.M.M. Los Reyes Magos de Oriente y colaboran para conseguir colmar los sueños de todos los que dejan su carta esperando recibir que se cumplan”.

Otro clásico de las Navidades son los desfiles de la Comparsa de Gigantes y Cabezudos, que recorrerán las calles de la ciudad complutense encabezados por los tres gigantes, los tres Reyes Magos, que salen a la calle exclusivamente durante las Navidades y en Cabalgata de Reyes, que este año repite y afianza su recorrido por Vía Complutense.

La Cabalgata de Reyes partirá a las 18:00 horas de la rotonda de la Calle Luis de Medina (ver mapa) y finalizará sobre las 20:30 horas. “De las doce carrozas que componen la cabalgata, seis son de nueva fabricación y se realizan expresamente para Alcalá de Henares, destacando los espectaculares tronos de los Reyes Magos”, ha destacado Sanz.

Aproximadamente, más de 130 figurantes y 80 músicos participarán en la cabalgata 2014. Se lanzarán 5.000 kilos de caramelos sin gluten, gracias también a colaboración de las Peñas Festivas de Alcalá.

“Esta previsto –ha avanzado la edil de Fiestas Mayores- que Sus Majestades de Oriente lleguen a Alcalá el 5 de enero a las 11:00 horas para ser recibidos en el Ayuntamiento y posteriormente visitarán entre otros lugares a los niños y niñas ingresados en el Hospital Príncipe de Asturias, para repartir entre ellos ilusión y esperanza”.

Alcalá Welcomes Christmas

Christmas is already here and Alcalá de Henares has been preparing to celebrate accordingly. You will find activities for all ages.

Christmas Is Really For the Children

The City of Alcala de Henares has designed a schedule with dozens of activities for the little ones. Workshops, films, games and music will remain unified in a 800 square meters heated tent to be installed in the Plaza de los Santos Niños.

From December 21 to January 6, and from 11:00 to 14:00 and 18:00 to 21:00 (except film or show days), childen can attend this Great Free Kids Park. They may also enjoy free family movie screenings (Friday, December 27, 18:00. “Christmas Carol” and Friday, January 3, 18:00. “The Polar Express”).

XV Aniversario de la declaración Ciudad Patrimonio de la Humanidad

El 2 de diciembre de 1998 se cumplen 15 años desde la declaración Ciudad Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco.

El 2 de diciembre de 1998 es ya una fecha fundamental en la historia de Alcalá de Henares. Ese día, la asamblea general de la UNESCO, reunida en Kioto, declaró que la “Universidad y Recinto Histórico de Alcalá de Henares” merecían ser incluidos en la lista del Patrimonio Mundial; este reconocimiento se refiere al patrimonio histórico y artístico que atesora la ciudad complutense, y también a la trascendente aportación de Alcalá a la cultura universal especialmente en los siglos XVI y XVII.

El fin de semana y el lunes, jornadas de puertas abiertas en la Red de Patrimonio Histórico de la ciudad complutense.

El lunes, 2 de diciembre, se entregará el Premio Ciudad de Alcalá Patrimonio Mundial a Talleres de Arte Granda, se presentará la restauración de la escultura de San Bernardo y se podrá visitar la sede de la Biblioteca Nacional en Alcalá de Henares.

Carles Francino realizará el programa “La ventana” de la Cadena Ser en directo desde el Paraninfo de la Universidad de Alcalá (actividad organizada por la Universidad de Alcalá con la colaboración del Ayuntamiento).

Por la noche, excepcional concierto de Diana Navarro con la Banda Sinfónica Complutense.

El Ayuntamiento de Alcalá de Henares, para conmemorar el XV Aniversario de esa declaración, ha querido abrir las puertas de la Red de Patrimonio Histórico para que alcalaínos y visitantes puedan conocerlo y, además, apreciar el esfuerzo que en estos años se ha realizado en su recuperación y puesta en valor.

Estas jornadas de puertas abiertas tendrán lugar los días 30 de noviembre (sábado) y 1 y 2 de diciembre; se suma a esta iniciativa por primera vez la  sede de la Biblioteca Nacional en Alcalá, que ha programado cuatro visitas guiadas a sus instalaciones el próximo lunes.

El lunes 2 de diciembre (11:00 h.) se entregará en el Salón de Plenos el Premio Ciudad de Alcalá Patrimonio Mundial a Talleres de Arte Granda, que desde su fundación en 1891 trabaja desde la ciudad complutense en la creación y restauración de obras de arte.

Granda destaca, además, por su gran labor en la recuperación de oficios tradicionales.

Por otra parte es bien conocido su excepcional trabajo en el ámbito de la restauración del Patrimonio Histórico, trabajo que podemos admirar y valorar en la actuación sobre los cuadros del monasterio de San Bernardo nuestra ciudad, a lo que suma el esfuerzo en difundir los valores de conservación y respeto al patrimonio que se realiza desde la Fundación Félix Granda.

Talleres de Arte Granda es una empresa que se encuentra plenamente arraigada en nuestra ciudad, que cuenta con una plantilla de más de cien personas mayoritariamente dedicadas a la producción artística.

6 best apps for study abroad students

Evernote: Thanks, Evernote, for being the greatest app ever. Use it to record lectures and take notes in class, make grocery lists and create to-do lists for your travel destination. Evernote lets you make notes on your computer that automatically sync to your phone without Wi-Fi. Save your itinerary, hotel information and address of the closest coffee shop right to your phone for easy access when you’re on the go.

Snapchat: Can we take a second to marvel at modern communication? One week I’m two blocks away from you, sending you a Snapchat of a weird rock I just found, and the next week I’m three thousand miles away, still sending you weird rock pictures. Foodspotting: Hungry in a new city? Check your Foodspotting app – it scans your location for user-generated photos and reviews of good food in your area. This is ideal for people like me who go from “Hey, maybe I’m hungry” to “I am currently dying of starvation” in about thirty seconds. Foodspotting generates recommendations based on your location, so you can choose between lots of delicious options nearby.

Google Translate: If I could have a superpower, I would speak every language. Dead languages? What dead languages? I’m speaking Latin like I own the place. But until that day comes, Google Translate is the way to go. Don’t be dumb when you’re in a new country. Know what you want to say when you get to the coffee shop. Don’t just point and say it sheepishly in English – zero people will like you. Get out that Google translate on your way there, figure out what you want to say, practice your pronunciation, and saunter in proudly like you’re (almost) bi-lingual.

Stock up on apps to make your life easier while you are abroad. They can make you a better traveler – more organized, more prepared, and more relaxed. Apps are a great resource for traveling folk who want to stay connected and make the most of their incredible experience abroad.
